It didn't work.

Uhm, it didn't. The USSR collapsed because it was so inefficient and resulted in shoddy buildings, shortages of everything people need and tons of corruption. They also killed tens of millions of people. Same with China. China's growing now because it's turned into a mix of capitalism and communism, with capitalism directed by the totalitarian government. But they still put you in the gulag if you question them. It's still a bad place to live

A couple of things, actually. All the misery that was associated with the Great Depression practically disappeared and was turned into patriotism when Japan attacked. Many of the un-employed were drafted into the military, thus there was no need for a revolution. The communists were already a huge faction in Russia and China when they took over during wartime. The Russian government was about a month old when it was taken over by the communists. The Chinese government was on the run from the Japanese too.

Communism worked in neither country. While still claiming to be a communist nation, China has for a long time been switching to a market based economy. China now has what is basically a capitalist economic system.

Mostly because of the fact that USA lets people vote. It is not popular so only countries that have a dictator can make pure communism work. They PRETEND to be democratic, and say that it is part of communism system. But that is all lies. Most people will chose a free economy if given a choice. This does not mean the communism is all bad or capitalism all good. It just has to do with human nature. Most people are stupid so giving them the vote is very dangerous and may work or may not work. USA also lies to its people (voters) but tells different lies. Nobody really knows if there is a better system or not. Both seem to have major flaws. Like most things, it may be that a blend of the best of each that may be the answer. We will probably never know.

Keep in mind that in both cases the communist party didn't come to power until after a civil war had been fought. The Russian Revolution of 1917 saw the overthrow of the Czar' Government. It was then followed by the Russian Civil War, 1917 to 1923 with the core period being 1918 to 1921. The Russian Civil War resulted in the communist Bolsheviks becoming the dominant power in Russia. This brought Lenin to power, and his death in 1924 brought Stalin to power. Stalin's dictatorship is what made communism "work" for so long, the premiers after him were able to keep it going for thirty years more. Millions died because of Stalin and his policies. The Communists came to power during the Chinese Civil War in 1949 after more than twenty years of fighting (WWII put a temporay hold on the war) and it would be a year before major hostilities on the mainland ended. This saw Mao Zedong come to power. Just like Stalin, millions died because of Chairman Mao and his policies. Basically communism "worked" because it was forced on you. when given the choice, ultimately it doesn't work. That's why it doesn't work in a country like the US where the people have a choice, which they are supposed to be able to do through voting.

To understand Russia's and China's Communism, one must understand their history PRIOR to Communism. Napoleon's French invasion of Russia in 1812. Followed up by the retaliation War of the Sixth Coalition. The Decembrist revolt of 1825. 1855 the Crimean War. 1877–78 the Russo-Turkish War. Alexander II was killed in 1881 by revolutionary terrorists. The Russo–Japanese War of 1904. Bloody Sunday massacre in January 1905. The Russian Revolution of 1905. In 1914 Russia entered World War I . The February Revolution of 1917, forced Nicholas II to abdicate; he and his family were imprisoned. They were later executed during the Russian Civil War. Finally, the October Revolution, led by Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin, overthrew the Government and then we have Communism. Russia had been in absolutely pitiful shape under their last monarchy, while they lived in obscenely opulent wealth their people lived in poverty stricken hungry desperation from over a 100 years of nothing but war. During WWI Russian soldiers watched from horseback as the Western world rolled on to the battle field with their mechanized infantries. The American, French and British soldiers went home to their cars and telephones while Russians went back to their Medieval villages and wagons. As China opened up to foreign trade and missionary activity, opium produced by British India was forced onto Qing China. Two Opium Wars with Britain weakened China greatly. European imperialism proved to be disastrous for them. The Taiping Civil War, which lasted from 1851 to 1862. Costing at least 20 million lives (more than the total number of fatalities in the First World War), with some estimates of up to two hundred million. Other costly rebellions followed the Taiping Rebellion. The Punti-Hakka Clan Wars (1855–67). The Nien Rebellion (1851–1868). The Muslim Rebellion (1862–77). The Panthay Rebellion (1856–1873). The Miao Rebellion (1854–73) Millions dead. Disastrous results for the economy. The flow of British opium continued. The famine in 1876–79 claimed between 9 and 13 million lives in northern China. From 108 BC to 1911 China experienced 1,828 famines. or one per year, somewhere in the empire.[38] While China was wracked by continuous war, Japan succeeded in rapidly modernizing its military and set its sights on Korea and Manchuria. The ill-fated 1900 Boxer Rebellion against westerners in Beijing. Mass civil disorder. Two year old Puyi became emperor of China. 1912, the Republic of China 1916, China was politically fragmented. 1920s, the Kuomintang, under Chiang Kai-shek The Sino-Japanese War of 1937–1945 Japanese Invasion. WWII. Chinese Civil War. Both Russian and China had been brutally beaten on for over 100 yearsstraightt. Both Russia and China had been historically separatists. Both had greatly suffered under worthless monarchs that lived in obscene wealth while their people lived in the MIddle Ages. They both had been brutally assaulted by their next door neighbors.... and abused. Western civilization had only shown themsubjugatedd Imperialism proposed at the end of a gun. The Americans, the British, the French .... would have just moved in and taken over like they did in Indo-China, India, thePhilippiness, Hong Kong. They were both way too fragmented for Democracy and had no internal financial business to support a democracy. They were too large for a dictatorship. They could trust no one but themselves .... and for very good reason. It worked initally because it evened out the resources, gave the population some hope of survival, gave them one set of rules without church or foriegn interferance, it put the kids in school, workers in the fields and factories, and a loaf of bread on the table, gave them a common goal and more equality than either country ever had before. As much as the free world loathess it, Communism SAVED Russia and China. Unfortunately, Communism doesn't work for very long. But it took them both a while to admit this fact and both have been working very quietly pursuing a trade market and outside commerce for quite some time. Still .....

I think it needs to be reiterated…Communism has never worked in any country that has ever tried it. The Soviet Union and the Peoples Republic of China imposed their versions of the Communist command economy on their people as long as they could with an excessively harsh police state. Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union still collapsed. China and Vietnam discarded the command economy for a modified free market economy while still imposing the police state on their citizens.
