Sitting around here in Afghanistan a few of us got into this debate. During the fiercest fighting of operation Barbarossa on the Russian front Germany had 41 Divisions on the Russian Front. If those Divisions had been able to fight elsewhere could the Allies have won? Dang Bronwen you have a wonderful brain. You made most of the same points I did. Thanks. Best answer so far.

Yes. The allies were better equipped and still had better numbers. If Hitler had not attacked Russia, it would only have taken longer for the Allies to win. It was unavoidable.

If wishes were kisses, I would have a face full. Hitler intended to take over the western world. He made lots of false promises. So, speculation is just that - speculation.

It depends. Better tactics and strategy could always win a battle, with technology and equipment as second factors. Even if the Allies were better-equipped, German divisions could have won a decisive victory over the Allies if it was led by a competent leader with precise coordination and timing of attacks.

Hitler was doom to have that happen to him when somebody or anybody wants to rule anything or everything well you can't .i don't have a religion but i do believe in God and God rules everything.

I don't think so. If Hitler had not opened up another front by attacking Russia, he would have eventually captured England. He could have just used all his resources in bringing the English to their knees. Churchill was very adamant that the English would continue to fight, from bases in Canada if necessary, but the reality is that it's a long way from Canada to England, and once England was captured and subdued, there would have been no real staging area for the Allies to launch a land assault on mainland Europe. Had Hitler controlled England, he would also have controlled the Straits of Gibraltar, and all Atlantic approaches to North Africa. There would have been no way to resupply troops in North Africa, or to stop the Germans from completely taking over there. With the Mediterranean closed to the Allies, there would have been no way to stage attacks on Italy. All of Hitler's generals, or at least the vast majority of them, told him that it was suicide to open up fighting on two fronts. I think we tend to forget that the German Army was run by extremely competent men who had spent their entire lives studying tactics and waging war. If he had listened to them, the Allies would have been in a lot of trouble. Lucky for us, though the commanders knew what they were doing, their supreme commander was wandering around smelling daisies and worrying about other stuff. Had he paid attention, Americans would still be Americans, but Europe would be a vastly different place.

The answer is NO! He hated the Russians more than the Allies. He was going after them, no matter what happened to the Western Front. He wanted a stalemate in the west, who he believe and rightly so, that the West would be able to defeat him. What he didn't want, was the American involvement into WWII. WE DON'T BACK DOWN, PERIOD! Plus, we didn't declare war on Germany, until they declared war on us first. We declared war on one of Germany's allies first. Which was the Empire of Japan. Technically, the war started in 1939, unless you go back further to when Japan invaded China and that was 1936 (?). We didn't get into it, until after December 7, 1941. Stalin wanted the pact with Hitler, so he could build-up Russia's war machine. He didn't get the time to do that properly. If you were to look at the timelines, you can figure out what happened after the U. S. got into the war. Because, we were already prepared for war. Technically!

Very unlikely. If England fell, all of the Commonwealth would have been compromised including Canada. It was his stupidity in turning on Russia that cost him the war. Up until Aug/ '41, the American people were against the European war.FDR , with some of his top aides especially Lt. Comm. Arthur H. McCollum. He proposed an 8 step plan to provoke Japan into attacking Pearl Harbour. In fact it was Russia who primarily brought down germany. That in no way discredits the other allies, but we had to have the aid of Russia. I used to believe we would have won eventually, only because I wanted to believe it, but know , I don't think so. I have aways been very proud of our Canadian Armed Forces and still am. I wish you and all our allies God speed and a safe return home. Thanks for what you are sacrificing.
